Representation in specialist courts, including Drug Court (CMD) and the Mental Health Diversion List
Pip has represented clients in both the Court Mandated Drug program and Mental Health Diversion list. When she worked at Legal Aid, Pip was the designated lawyer for both of these specialist lists at various times, and she has extensive experience in these Courts.
Drug Court, or CMD, is a sentencing option that is an alternative to an actual period of imprisonment. It is available for people who plead or are found guilty of offences that are directly related to their drug habit. There are a number of factors that may impact on someone's eligibility or suitability for a Drug Treatment Order. Pip has represented multiple people on these orders (which are available as a sentencing option in both the Magistrates Court and the Supreme Court) and has seen first hand the drastic positive changes that can be gained from participation on this program. Not only can people stay out of prison, but they can work towards living a drug and crime free life.
The Mental Health Diversion List is a theraputic Court run by specialist Magistrates. Pip has represetned many people with mental health issues that have been assessed as suitable to participate on this list. The list connects individuals with services depending on their circumstances, and aims to assist and support individuals with mental health issues that have been charged with criminal offences.
